Effect of the Premedication of Atropine on Cardiac Rhythm, Pulse Rate, Blood Pressure, and Airway Secretion

Abstract
The occurance of cardiac arrhythmias and changes in pulse rate and blood pressure during mask anesthesia with enflurane and halothane were investgated in 80 patients with special reference to the influence of atropine 0.01 mg/kg 5 min before anesthesia. The average duration of mask anesthesia was 30 mins in all groups.
1. Nodal arrhythmias were significant more common in the atropine group than in the non-atropine groups.
2. Following atropine administration heart rate significant increased whereas very slightly increase were seen in the non-atropine groups.
3. Blood pressure fell at the induction but was almost back to normal at 1 hour after induction, but it was unaffected by atropine.
4. Suction of the airway was necessary in only one case.
